What makes the Irish ecosystem unique from other financial services centres in Europe is the breadth of different types of companies and businesses in the financial services industry, paired with the presence of a massive technology cohort. The location has helped a lot of cross-pollination and access to talent with the mindset of the tech companies. Today, financial services companies must become tech companies; you need these cultures blending together if you want to stay relevant.

Mediolanum

Mediolanum was founded in 1982 in Milan, Italy and has since grown to become one of the top retail banks in the country, ranking among the top 40 largest listed companies on the Italian Stock Exchange. The Mediolanum Group is now a market leader in Italy and Spain, with extensive networks of financial advisors, and is active in banking, life insurance and asset management sectors.

Long history in Ireland

Mediolanum International Funds Limited (MIFL) serves as the European asset management platform for the Mediolanum Banking Group. MIFL established its presence in Dublin in 1997. As of December 2025, MIFL manages over €70 billion in assets across more than 70 funds and institutional mandates.

The company’s investment headquarters in the Irish capital employs over 200 professionals in key front-office roles, including portfolio management across active fundamental equity and fixed income strategies, as well as operating one of the most experienced and largest multi-manager teams in Europe.

Decision making processes, from product design to investment management and sales and marketing activities, are all run from the Dublin office.

In August 2001, the Mediolanum Group acquired Western International Life Insurance Company Ltd, subsequently renamed Mediolanum International Life. This entity primarily focuses mainly on life and pension insurance distributed through branches in Italy, Spain, and Germany.

Over the years, MIFL has significantly expanded its investment team, growing from active fundamental equity and active fundamental fixed income to establishing a team in quantamental investing and attracting talent from across Europe. The organisation places a strong emphasis on continuous skill development, highlighted by the launch of the Mediolanum investment Academy in Ireland in 2022. This two-year programme aims to nurture young talent and shape the future of the Mediolanum investment team leaders in Ireland.

Investing in talent development

MIFL has long embedded learning and development into its core values, starting with Banca Mediolanum Corporate University. In response to sustained business growth, increasing industry complexity, and rapid transformation driven by AI, MIFL decided to launch a completely revamped L&D programme in 2023. IDA Ireland played a pivotal role in this journey by providing matching funding, which was instrumental in accelerating its implementation.

MIFL also values Ireland’s unique ecosystem, where a robust financial services sector coexists with leading global technology multinationals. This proximity fosters collaboration opportunities and enables talent mobility between the two industries, further enhancing the company’s growth and innovation potential.
